George Washington James DiStefano was born to Girolamo DiStefano and Katherine Jennie Luisi on 22 February 1930 in Tabiona, Utah. The family lived in Tabiona and managed their Country Store in Hanna. He was the eighth child behind six brothers and one sister.

Tabiona is a small farming town bordering the Duchesne river, nestled between two mountain ranges. Ten miles to the north, the Uintah mountains begin their steep ascent. The town was named for a Ute chief, Chief Tabby-To-Kwanah. There are presently 88 males and 83 females that reside within the city limits, but most of the valley’s population live in the rural areas within 5 or 6 miles of the town.
Because of it’s small population, Tabiona houses all 12 grades in the same building, which was also the case when George attended school there.
